PTSO Meeting Minutes

February 5, 2018 

PTSO Members in Attendance: Mary Annakin, Shanise Allen, Amy Luther, Kim Gagliano, Ruth Cole, Michele Picard, Martha Thompson, Karen Weeks, Leanne Ward, Whitney Wilson, Jeannie Rice and Mr. Giangrosso. 

Call to meeting at 8:15 AM. 

Minutes from January 8th meeting were approved. Karen Weeks made a motion and Amy Luther seconded the motion. January minutes will be forwarded for publication. 


·         Sadie’s Dance will be held on March 10th. Spirit Nights to be held at restaurants and Skates 280. Tickets can be purchased online for $5 and at the door for $10.

·         Make-A-Wish Foundation to be held on March 5th – 9th. Jeans week for teachers and a coin drive, to be for the Sadie’s King.

·         Global Scholar Party for students who met their winter - Global Scholar goal to be held on March 21st. Mrs. Strickland would like sponsors to provide gift cards, freebies, and money as prizes. 


·         Course selection meetings will begin on 2/1/28 – 3/1/28.

·         Workkeys Testing will be on Wednesday, February at 8:15 (all seniors). E-Learning Assignments for grades 9-11. Grades 9th and 10th will have Digital Citizenship – Common Sense Media. 11th Grade will have Method Test Prep.

·         College Information Parent Nights with Mr. Prater. Junior meetings will begin February 5th – 16th. He will meet with 20 at a time.

·         Progress reports are to go home on Friday, February 9th.

·         8th graders coming to SPHS February 8th 9:00-10:30. 8th grade parent night February 8th 6:30-8:00 PM.

·         Academy of Craft Training Interviews Feb 9th from 10:30 - 12:30.

·         Suicide Prevention Presentations in Health classes Feb 5th & 6th.

·         Erin’s Law Presentation for all 9th graders on Thursday, Feb 22nd to be held in theater and cafeteria

·         Bystander Button will be released on the SPHS website when a student sees bullying and would like to report it (during Pink Shirt Week).

·         Discipline issues: Vapes are becoming an issue and Apple watches are being used to cheat on tests.

·         Black History Month Traveling Museum to be held on February 12th -16th in the library.

·         Scantron Testing Window - January 8th - February 15th. This test replaces ACT Aspire. 9th Grade (Reading & Algebra) and 10th Grade (Reading and Geometry) will be taking the Scantron Testing.

·         National Honor Society Applications are being submitted and 180 students qualify for NHS.

·         Weather Makeup Day to be held on February 19th. Teacher Professional Development Day will be changed from February 19th to May 29th.

·         PTSO Grants are very much appreciated from the teachers and many have already starting to purchase and to use.

·         SP Girls basketball versus Hoover was on TV (first time) and it wasn't a championship game.  SP girls have held the #2 ranking all year.

·         Wrestling-Super Sectionals February 9th – 10th to be held in Montgomery. State Meet in Huntsville, Von Braun Center to be held on February 16th – 17th.

·         Indoor track state met February 2nd and 3rd.

·         Boy bowling made it to quarterfinals and were eliminated by Grissom ending their streak of state championships.  Girls did not get through regionals.

·         Cheerleaders will be attending Nationals in Orlando from February 9th – 11th.

·         Girls Basketball to host the Area 6 Tournament.

·         Boys Basketball will travel to Mtn. Brook and play Mtn. Brook, Thursday February 8th at 7:30pm. 


·         Nominating Committee for 2018-2019 PTSO Board will be held on February 20th at 2:00.

TREASURER’S REPORT – Michelle Picard: Grant money awarded $1950 has been spent and $12,975 is remaining in the budget. 


Hospitality – Martha Thompson: Teacher of the Quarter Breakfast to be held on March 7th. Volunteers will be asked to bring food items for breakfast. A Sign-Up Genius will be created and sent out to all volunteers. 

HPTC – Ruth Cole: Hoover City School District will get a new website this summer. Riverchase Middle School (future career training center) will be postponed for opening until 2018-2019. District reworking exam schedule and changes are currently being discussed. 

Sunshine – Jeannie Rice: Birthday bags are complete and to be handed out for the remaining of the year.


Meeting adjourned at 9:40 AM. 

Next meeting PTSO Meeting will be held on March 5th at 8:15 AM.
