Melodi Shaw, a rising senior at Spain Park High School, was named 1st runner up in the Distinguished Young Women Program of Jefferson County on July 16 held at Hoover High School. Ten Jefferson County area highschools were represented with 17 participants.
Melodi was recognized as a a preliminary winner in scholastics and self expression and the over all talent winner of the Jefferson County Program, performing "Se Tu M'ami, Se Sospiri", an Italian aria. She received over $40,000 in cash and renewable tuition scholarships. Melodi, daughter of Mike and Shelley Shaw, is a member of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, SPHS Honor Council, SPHS Chamber and Concert Choirs and is a Captain of the SPHS Colorguard.
DYW is part of a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent in young women. Cash scholarships are awarded at the local level and millions in college-granted scholarships are available ($1.1 billion nationally).
