My name is Craig Thompson and I have been at Spain Park for about 8 years. During my time here, I have taught a variety of classes. I have taught US History 10, US History 11, AP US History 10, Law Academy (I - IV) and Special Topics: The Holocaust. I have enjoyed each and everyone of them. Currently, I am teaching AP US History 10 and Law Academy I: Philosophy and Ethics. I coordinate the AP US History class with Mr. Stamper and Mr. Pate and have been thrilled with the increased interest in the program.
I also helped found the SPHS Law Academy here at Spain Park in 2007 and saw our first class graduate in 2011. They accomplished a great many things and have set the foundation for a great and successful program for years to come. We have seen our students compete in law related competitions at both the state and national level with great deals of success. The continued growth of this program is a testement to both Ms. Libby Day (co-director) and the students who have made this program such a success.
As for myself, I was born here in Birmingham in the seventies and I am the first southern born member of a family that hails from Buffalo, NY and Erie, PA. I attended Hoover City Schools (Shades Mountain & Simmons) until high school when I switched over to John Carroll. From there I went to Tulane University in New Orleans and received a BA in History and Philosophy in 1998. After that I returned to Alabama to complete my Masters of Education degree at the University of Montevallo. I taught for about a year at Hoover High School before deciding to join the Peace Corps. I served in Cameroon, West Africa for 2 1/2 years as an English teacher in a French speaking zone. In addition, I did work in HIV prevention and women's rights. I loved my time there, but was happy to return to Alabama. I met my wife, Sara, soon upon return and we were married in 2007. She is also an educator and shares my devotion to education in Alabama. We just had our first child (Elliot) on April 10, 2012 and have been thrilled to see our family grow.
I look foward to returning to SPHS each year and this year is no different.
