  • 2005 - Present  Spain Park High School

Burgin Mathews has taught at Spain Park since 2005. Over those years he's taught he range of core English classes and electives: English 12, A.P. Literature and Composition, Creative Writing, Film Studies, and--the most recent addition to this list--English 11.

Burgin was born and raised in Montgomery. In 2000, he graduated from Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY) with a bachelor’s degree in American Studies. He spent the next five years in North Carolina (first Asheville, then Chapel Hill/Durham), where he pursued graduate work in both folklore and teaching. Burgin moved back to his home state—and to Spain Park—in 2005.

Burgin’s favorite, most personally influential writers include, in no particular order: Walt Whitman, Gertrude Stein, Kurt Vonnegut, Paul Auster, Aldous Huxley, William Carlos Williams, Albert Murray, and Studs Terkel. This list is enormously incomplete, but each of these writers contributed in some real way to Burgin’s view of the world and his place in it. If forced to name a “favorite song,” he would probably say “Desolation Row,” by Bob Dylan.
